Nothing is at it seems.Eugenides is now the king of Attolia but he tries hard not to be..or is he? He is not loved and he is the focus of pranks from his own guard. Although the story is from the pov of Costis we learn a lot about the mysterious ways of the king. At the same time we can see how Costis's feelings change from hateful to respectful.
Eugenides is one of the most interesting characters ever created in my opinion and I think this the best book so far in the series.
